In a few months, Scotland will be voting in a referendum on their independence from England. There is much uncertainty, much of it economic, about what will happen if they vote to become independent. Read (listen to) these two articles (
1 and
2) about their prospects after independence. What key COGOPO concepts do these stories cover? What are some possible FRQ or MC questions they could ask about these concepts? What do you think would happen (good and bad) if they became independent?
The stories cover sovereignty, autonomy, and economic factors. Scotland has it's own government, but the UK parliament has the final say. This vote would help create a sense of sovereignty and autonomy for the Scottish government. A good FRQ would focus on the vote itself, and a previous FRQ has asked an example of a referendum on independence. MC questions could ask things about the type of government system, questions about the EU membership, and basic economic questions. Like the guy in the first article, Scotland would have to face severe economic trouble if it became independent, but every people deserve to be free and rule themselves, so they should at least have that chance at independence.
