Opposition leader Boris Nemtsov assassinated

Boris Nemtsov was murdered this Friday in what seems to be a "contract-style" hit.  Read this article about the events surrounding the apparent assassination.  Why do you think he was murdered?  Do you believe it was politically motivated?

Listen here for an update from NPR on the assassination.

  2. All the facts seem to indicate that Nemtsov's death was politically motivated. Consideriing his outspoken stance against Putin, and a history of Putin's rivals mysteriously dying, it is safe to say that Nemtsov's death was likely a means of silencing his criticism of Putin's regime. Nemtsov's stance in the Russia Ukraine conflict seems especially important, since that is Russia's biggest foreign policy issue right now. The article states that right before his death, Nemtsov had been preparing papers that would show that Putin had been sending Russian troops into Ukraine, thus proving he had been lying. I think that this is the main reason why he had been assassinated- to prevent this information from being released.

  3. I think Boris Nemstsov’s death was politically motivated. He was a part of an opposition group against the government, giving reason for the government (Putin) to kill him since he was a threat. Another important point is his stance on the Ukraine issue. The article pointed out that before his death, he was gathering documents that showed Russian military in Ukraine, potentially giving evidence against the Russian government. This would decrease trust in the government, and hurt Putin. Nemtsov’s threat to the government, is the most likely cause of his death.
